PHOTOGRAPHY BY DUNCAN NEILSON

All of the warp-faced rep weavings in "The Hidden Element" are based on a river which I saw from an airplane window at the 34,000 foot level. The river was probably the Snake River in Idaho, a silver band which serpentined through the landscape. For five hours, I sketched as many rivers and crop circles and land features as I could on a non-stop flight from Portland Oregon to Washington DC. The warp-faced rep hangings are designed as 16 block profile drafts, threaded on a 16 shaft loom. From these profile drafts of rivers, I wove four different series ... sixteen wall hangings in all.
